The holy month of Ramadan is a time for fasting and self-discipline for Muslims. It is also a time to purify the mind and body and empathize with the less fortunate. Fasting has many therapeutic benefits including increased blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. To help you ensure good oral hygiene practices during the fasting period.
What causes bad breath?
Often the bad odor that comes out of the mouth is caused by dental or gum problems. This can also be caused by the accumulation of food debris between teeth, the result of which is odor due to bacterial fermentation caused by bacteria that usually live in the mouth. Here are some of the causes of bad breath:
- Poor oral hygiene – The accumulation of bacterial plaque is known to cause bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease.
- Improper cleaning of false teeth – Like teeth, dentures can hold bacteria, tartar and cause bad breath when not properly cleaned.
- Smoking – including cigarettes, cigars, and shisha.
- Nutrition – Some foods can aggravate foul odors, such as onions, garlic and certain types of spices.
- Dry mouth – Also known as xerostomia, dry mouth is one of the main causes of bad breath. This is caused by an inadequate flow osaliva and is a common side effect of certain drugs and is a symptom of several medical conditions.
- Other non-oral conditions – including nasal, sinus, throat or digestive disorders.
How does bad breath occur during the fasting period?
Saliva plays an important role in protecting your mouth and reducing bacterial growth. Reducing salivary flow during fasting is the main reason for bad breath. After breaking, the salivary gland is stimulated immediately and saliva production becomes normal.
Is there a way to prevent bad breath when fasting?
Here are some important tips to prevent bad breath when fasting.
- Perform excellent oral hygiene to remove plaque efficiently.
- Eat fruits and vegetables and avoid salty, fried and sticky foods.
- Reduce diuretics such as coffee, tea, soda, and all other caffeinated drinks.
- Do not smoke.
- Drink plenty of water during iftar, rinse your mouth with water during fasting hours without swallowing it.
What are your main tips for maintaining a healthy oral hygiene routine during Ramadan?
- Oral hygiene during the holy month of Ramadan is no different from your regular dental hygiene.
- Brush thoroughly before going to bed at night and I recommend brushing after Sahur (eating before dawn) for at least 2 minutes.
- Clean the teeth not once a day.
- Clean your tongue using a tongue scraper or a separate toothbrush.
- Use alcohol-free mouthwash.
