Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, today confirmed that the company lost nearly $ 41 million in Bitcoin. This seems to be the biggest hack until now. In a statement, Binance Changpeng Zhao’s CEO said the company discovered a “large-scale security breach” earlier on May 7, as a result hackers could steal around 7,000 bitcoins, valued at 40.6 million at the time of writing.
Hacking news came just hours after Zhao tweeted on his Twitter account that Binance had “carried out scheduled server maintenance” which had an impact on deposits and withdrawals for several hours. ”
Hackers use various attack techniques, including phishing and computer viruses, to carry out intrusions and be able to penetrate one hot BTC wallet (cryptocurrency wallet connected to the Internet), which contains about 2% of the company’s total BTC ownership, and attract stolen Bitcoin in one transaction.
What is even more disturbing is that the company acknowledged the hackers had succeeded in getting critical user information, such as an API key, two-factor authentication code, and other potential information, needed to enter the Binance account.
Zao also warned that “hackers can still control certain user accounts and can use them to influence prices.”
