2 min read

After years of development the Stratolaunch aircraft finally took off for the first time from Mojave Air and Space Port in California, USA, at 6:58 am local time. The flight lasts for about two and a half hours, where it reaches a height of 17,000 feet (5182 m) and a maximum speed of 189 mp / hour (304 km / h), according to Stratolaunch System. This plane has a wingspan of 385 feet (117 m) and length 238 feet (73 m). This features six Pratt & Whitney PW4056 turbofan engines, similar to those used on Airbus A300, Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 767.

Stratolaunch was developed by Northrop Grumman’s division, Scaled Composites for Stratolaunch Systems Corporation, a company founded in 2011 by American billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen. Stratolaunch Systems plans to use airplanes to launch air-to-space rockets weighing up to 500,000 lb (226,796 kg).

All of these ideas were initiated by the late one of Microsoft’s founders, Paul Allen. A white plane called Roc, designed to drop rockets and other space vehicles and has been claimed by the company as the easiest satellite carrier, is as easy as booking plane tickets. Pilot pilot named Evan Thomas, former pilot of the F-16 US Air Force. Stratolaunch became the aircraft with the largest wing span in the World defeating the Antonov An-225. The Antonov An-225 once amazed the world of its size. The width of the wings only can reach 84 meters. This size is bigger than the length of five container trucks.
