Chinese Hackers Bombard Telegram With DDOS Attack
Telegram founder Pavel Durov has suggested that the Chinese government might be behind the recent DDoS attack on encrypted messaging services. Writing on Twitter, the founder called it “DDoS-sized state actor” which mainly came from IP addresses located in China. Durov noted that the attack coincided with ongoing protests in Hong Kong, where people use encrypted messaging applications such as Telegram to avoid detection when coordinating their protests.
The attack raises questions about whether the Chinese government is trying to disrupt encrypted messaging services and limit its effectiveness as an organizing tool for hundreds of thousands of demonstrators who took part in protests. Bloomberg reports that encrypted messaging applications such as Telegram and FireChat are currently trending at the Apple App Store Hong Kong, when demonstrators tried to hide their identities from the Beijing-backed government of Hong Kong.
