Thousands of Rare Animal Fossils Found in China
A team of researchers from Northwest University and Guizhou University, both in China and one from the US, have found thousands of fossil animals near the Danshui river. Fossils found show amazing details of marine organisms. They represent various species that lived for 518 million years ago, this discovery reveals new details of early life during a period known as the Cambrian Explosion.
Among the fossils found among them are primitive forms of jellyfish, sponges, anemones, worms, algae, small invertebrates called kinorhynchs or mud dragons and arthropods. More than 50 percent of the findings are considered previously unknown species.
He noted that the fossils were “truly of exceptional quality,” preserving the anatomy of species without some natural distortion that is sometimes produced from the fossilization process. Scientists will study recent Chinese discoveries to try and find out what they can reveal about early life on earth.
